History of Wood & Sons Pottery

 

The Wood family has a long and celebrated history in the Staffordshire Potteries, with ceramic production roots tracing back to the early 18th century, including the renowned Ralph and Moses Wood. The specific company, Wood & Son, was formally established in 1865 by Absalom Wood and his son Thomas Francis Wood. 

 

Over the decades, the company grew into one of the largest and most successful earthenware manufacturers in the region, known for producing high-quality, well-designed tableware for the middle market. 

 

Key milestones:

 

  • 1865: Founded as Wood & Son.
  • 1907: Name changed to Wood & Sons.
  • 1910: Became a limited company (Wood & Sons Ltd).
  • Mid-20th Century: The company employed approximately 1,000 people at its height and was known for popular lines like "Beryl Ware" and "Ivorine China".
